Taylor's principle + Innovative Teaching = Navrang Puzzle.

Let me first show you what I meant by Navrang cube puzzle , here is the pic :

So our Professor  Dr.Mandi bought this puzzle into the class so as to explain the Taylor's principle of scientific management , but let me first tell you about what are Taylor's scientific management principles:

1.Replace working by rule of thumb or simple habit and common sense, and instead use the scientific method to study work and determine the most efficient way to perform specific tasks.

2.Rather than simply assign workers to just any job, match workers to their jobs based on capability and motivation, and train them to work at maximum efficiency.

  • Rather than simply assign workers to just any job, match workers to their jobs based on capability and motivation, and train them to work at maximum efficiency.
  • Monitor worker performance, and provide instructions and supervision to ensure that they're using the most efficient ways of working.
  • Allocate the work between managers and workers so that the managers spend their time planning and training, allowing the workers to perform their tasks efficiently.

4.Allocate the work between managers and workers so that the managers spend their time planning and training, allowing the workers to perform their tasks efficiently.

To give us a practical example of these principles Dr.Mandi came up with this interesting Navrang puzzle in which all students were challenged to arrange 27 cubes of 9 different colours and make 1 big cube such that on one face no two blocks should have the same colour that is every face will have 9 different coloured blocks.
Many students tried as it seemed an easy task to perform but their performance was not satisfactory as they were randomly trying to place the different blocks on each other and were hoping that they will attain success in the end , so we saw that if in any organisation standards and proper work method is not mentioned or allotted it will lead to chaos and inefficiency which was what exactly happened in the class that day.
After that Dr.Mandi demonstrated the proper way of arranging the cubes in such a manner that the whole process looked very easy.He first sorted all the cubes according to their colour and then picked one cube from each colour and then arranged the cubes accordingly.Again students were invited to perform the same task and now they performed it with ease as the proper and optimal method was demonstrated by Dr.Mandi and now they just had to copy that.
So we learnt that proper and optimised  methoda of operation lead to increase in the productivity and efficiency which is exactly what Taylor's scientific management stated. So with another innovative and interactive way Dr.Mandi was able to prove his point and teach us the principles of management which we will never be able to learn through books.

Industry Interaction :  A session with Alums.

When you achieve something in life and come back to your institute to share your views , it is an great experience as we can see it from the interaction we had with Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni currently working as Manager at KPMG Consulting. The biggest B-School online gaming challenge "Mastishk"  was the brainchild of Mr.Nikhil. On personal request of Dr.Mandi he was there to share his experiences and give his insight on the corporate world.
He started the interaction by asking what were we expecting from NITIE and why were we here ? Students replied with their own reasons and he listened patiently to all the answers. Afterwards he asked how many of us were looking to start-up something of our own and why. Many of us replied to get freedom, money , satisfaction , be our own boss, try something new which we cannot do while in the job etc. He then explained to us that besides two points all other points were equally valid in the job and all these activities can be done within a job and nowadays company's are coming up with "Intrapreneurs"   which start something new  by remaining in the company only.
One thing which he mentioned was that one should not try to be an entrepreneur because he has a bad boss, or you hate your job, your working hours are long or for some other petty reasons because being an entrepreneur means even more hardships than those mentioned above so you should only become an entrepreneur if you actually have passion for something and you think that your company will not allow you to venture into that domain. He continued that craze for startups have gone up due to the recent billion dollar startups like facebook , instagram etc, he continued that the success stories are over glorified and the failures never get published so we think that startup are an easy way to make a huge amount of money in a very short time span but the reality is that only one in 1000 startups actually make it to the top league.
He then talked about Mastishk and at the same time Mr.Hemanth arrived , Mastishk being the brain-child of both these guys. Mr.Hemanth  seemed to be a true rockstar he was full of energy and instantaneously the energy level of the whole class reached a new level. He then talked about the importance of studies and extracurricular both and as both play an important role in defining one's future , he also mentioned how his placement interview was all about Mastishk and how he liked talking about it to all lengths. He also mentioned about all the hardships and difficult time they had to face during the launch of mastishk and how they overcome it and tasted success.
Overall it was a great experience which actually changed our perspective towards entrepreneurship and what difficulties one has to face to achieve something great in life. I would like to part away with the following quote :

" Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.”
