A Well defined goal is half the work done .

Source

It is said that "Well Planned is half done" so if you plan your goals well ahead of time you are actually ahead of your competition but not only you have to plan your goals well the goals should be SMART now what exactly is meant by SMART it will be discussed later but let me tell you first about an interesting phenomenon Pygmalion Effect.

So the Pygmalion effect state that the behavior of an individual can be changed if people have great expectations from them for eg A team captain uses this effect to great use by motivating his team players and setting their goal a notch higher what he actually think is achievable. This effect is extensively used in schools where teachers expect good performance from their students and students actually perform well in their studies.

So now back to SMART goals so what exactly they stand for :
 1.S: Specific, sensible, structured, sustainable
2. M: Measurable
3. A: Achievable, Ambitious, attainable
4.R: Realistic, Relevant
5.T: Tangible, Timely.

So these SMART goals become very important not only for an individual but for organizations too.As the management is more concerned about long term results so setting their goals clearly is one of the most important task.

SMART GOALS ------------->  SMART ORGANISATIONS

So stay tuned for some other concepts in POM.

The Dilemma-- Doing Right Things Effectively Or Doing Effective Things Rightly?

So before going to the big question of  doing right things effectively Or doing effective things rightly?Let us look at some of the basic concepts of Craftsmanship , Organization and Modern Management .

What is craftsmanship ?
Craftsmanship can be defined as the as the skill possessed by a certain individual who has reached a highest level of precision and accuracy in his work. Now any single person  can be a craftsman , cobbler , tailor, blacksmith all are craftsman as they work alone for earning their living. So Craftsmanship can be expressed as :

"Doing what you love to do and doing it right"

In current scenario Modern Management has taken a higher edge than craftsmanship .In this the focus is on deskilling the process that is breaking a complex process into very small parts so that these small parts are very easy to do and any individual can perform these tasks no particular skill is required for completing these tasks thereby removing the need of the craftsman. In this the complex work is divided into activities and then these activities are further sub divided into small and easy jobs.

In craftsmanship only one work is ongoing but in Organization parallel works are ongoing as the number of workers are more so many jobs can be completed in the same time simultaneously.  The interdependency in the organisation is much more than craftsmanship where a single person do all the work independently. The skill level required in Organisation is very less as compared to craftsmanship where one needs to be the master in his work.

Now these 3 E's more or less form the ultimate objective of each and every process in the organisation. These are :

Excellence = Efficiency x Effectiveness

Efficiency is  the ratio of your total output to your total input and effectiveness is how well your process is optimized to produce the desired result and excellence is getting more out of less for more.  One important thing to consider here is  efficiency is measurable but effectiveness is unquantifiable so should remember that :

"Being effective is all about doing the right things and being efficient is all about doing the things in the right manner."

Old school Vs New Age: A look at Theory X and Theory Y.

Two friends were talking when one of them asked the other "Give me an example of Theory X and Theory Y ? " The other friend replied " When you take your wife to shopping it is theory X and when you take your girlfriend to shopping it is theory Y ." So if you didn't get the joke then probably you should read rest of the post in which I will try to explain something about this motivation theory approach.

This theory was put forward by Douglas McGregor in his book “The Human Side of Enterprise” in 1960.This theory explains two type of type management:
1.Theory X -- is authoritarian style of management where the main focus of the manager is to increase the productivity
2. Theory Y -- is participative style of management In which it is believed that People are Committed to there objectives.

Theory X believes that people are really don't want to work, they prefer to do nothing or shy away from the given work.Work alone cannot be the source of motivation for the workers they need some more motivation in form of money, incentives, or reward.

Theory Y believes that people naturally like to work, they like to take responsibility and they enjoy their work.Work itself is enough as a source of motivation as completion of work provides them satisfaction, pride, growth and social contacts.

Here is a video which will make it more clear:

Now 4 different conditions arises :

1. A good manager supervise bad workers
2.A good manager supervise good workers
3.A bad manager supervise good workers
4.A bad manager supervise bad workers

In the first situation the company will suffer as manager will think that workers are self motivated whereas workers will like to be lead.

Now the second situation is the ideal one where a good manager and good workers co-exist.the workers will find their work satisfying and will be self motivated to do their own work and manager will take their opinion also in account while taking decisions.

In the third situation the workers will lose enthusiasm over a period of time due to the authoritative style of manager.

The last situation will ultimately lead to the shutting down of production facility.

So it is really so easy to manage people and get your wok done by keeping everyone happy ? Not really given the fact that each individual's response is different to different situation management becomes more of a Rubik cube where you have to align all the different pieces in their right place without disturbing the other pieces.

And it begins .....

So you must be wondering that how the pictures of what happen inside the classroom end up on my blog ? No I am not a sneaky clicker rather this class and professor both are a little hatke. Prof Mandi as he is commonly known as and a title he earned through the event "mandi" which is a regular affair in our college NITIE.

So this was our first class of POM and we were pulled out of our comfort zones by some hard hitting  facts like Our daily expenditure was around Rs 2500 and if we are not earning it simultaneously we are "Beggars". It is better to think about others but start thinking or judging yourself first. If we are not using what we have learnt in our engineering we are actually just wasting time.

Prof. Mandi entered the room with some toys and globe shaped stress balls and soon the atmosphere of the class became so lively and joyous with balls flying here and there and each and everyone of us totally involved in what he was saying. Soon we realised how difficult it was to sell something to someone and what things must be kept in mind if you are planning to start something on your own.

The lecture was filled with examples of people who have  "been there and done that " which ignited the spark in the minds of some students and Prof.Mandi's encouraging words really infused enthusiasm in them.

I Hope this enthusiasm will prevail and we will soon see some entrepreneurs among us.

Cheers,

Gaurav Kumar
